Pay & Benefits

Our school offers a very good compensation package.

Most importantly, you don't have to worry about being paid in full, or on time.  For those of you with China ESL experience, you know what this means.

Base Salary

Our base salary is 6,000 RMB per month (at the time of this writing the exchange rate is about 7.0 RMB to one US dollar).  You should be able to live comfortably on about one-third of that.  The rest you can save for travel or spend as you please.

See our FAQ for cost of living information.

Medical Benefits

Our school pays up to 400 RMB, per incident, per month, for medical costs related directly to unexpected illness or injury.  This also covers testing and medicine.

400 RMB is more than adequate to cover the basic illnesses and injuries you are likely to encounter during your stay here.

The best hospital in Jilin is down the block from our main school and you don't need an appointment to be seen.

We do not cover preventative medical procedures or testing, pregnancy, or emergency medical evacuation costs.

If you feel you need medical coverage beyond what we offer (catastrophic medical coverage, emergency medical evacuation services, etc.) you will need to find and purchase these on your own before you arrive.

Free Housing

Western style housing is not easy to find in Jilin.  Typical Chinese apartments frequently do not have hot water, showers, and the amenities to which most of you are accustomed.

We have however, been fortunate to secure quality housing that does meet Western standards.

The apartments are not shared as are those offered by many schools.

All of our apartments offer 24/7 unencumbered access.  Many schools require you to live on campus or in a gated compound with a curfew of 10 or 11 p.m.   You miss the curfew, you sleep in the street or figure a way in past the guard and locks.

Our apartments are all located within the community and you can come and go as you please as any other citizen living in your building.

This freedom does come with a tradeoff however.  Because you will be living in the community, you will not be living in or next to your school.  This means you will go to school by foot, bike, bus or taxi.  You will usually be within ten minutes from your school by taxi.

Jilin has an excellent public transportation system and taxi fares are quite reasonable (the meter drops at 5 RMB and increments in tenths of an RMB). Bus fare is one RMB.

Your apartment will be fully furnished to include bedding, cookware, cooking utensils, washing machine, etc.

Visa Processing

Do not plan to arrive on a Tourist Visa (L Visa) and have it converted to a Z Visa (working Visa). Your paperwork must be done before you arrive to China and you place yourself at risk by doing taking any shortcuts.  Our school is licensed to hire foreigners and we can get your Visa and working papers done the proper, legal way. Once you are in the mainland, we will pay to have all of your necessary documents processed.

NOTE: If you are currently in China working on an L (tourist) or F (Business) Visa, these cannot be converted to a legal working visa here. You will need to go to Hong Kong (at your own expense) and apply for a Z (working Visa) with documents from our school. This is another reason we encourage you to accept only fully legal employment; so you can more easily change employers.
